Zika is a virus that is spread by some kinds of mosquitoes. The mosquitoes that can spread Zika virus are not normally found in New Zealand, but they are found in many countries around the world.
The virus has been linked to birth defects for pregnant women overseas. Until more is known, the Ministry of Health recommends that if travelling in Zika infected areas (including the American Samoa, Samoa, Tonga), women who are pregnant or plan to become pregnant should consult with their healthcare provider and take all possible precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
The best way to prevent diseases spread by mosquitoes is to avoid being bitten. For more information and the latest advice, please visit the Ministry of Health, or Safetravel websites.
