Te Tumu Waiora - Easy Access to Local Wellbeing Support - for you and your Whānau

Te Tumu Waiora, which means to 'head towards wellness and health', is a new approach to mental health and wellbeing support and is being piloted in several ProCare practices across Auckland.

The pilot, which began in December 2017, has been designed as a holistic model, supporting and addressing the physical, emotional, and social needs of the person, rather than the traditional focus on mental health or addiction needs.

The aim of the pilot is to deliver a small amount of targeted, brief intervention to a large number of people, as opposed to a large amount of therapy, to a small group of people, as well as to connect social and specialist support across one continuum of care.

The pilot has been producing successful results so far:

  • 55% of people are seen on the same day for therapy and 67% are seen by a Health Coach on same day
  • 95% of people found sessions helpful
  • 71% had a positive change in their wellbeing
  • 0% difference in access across ethnicity – a big win for ensuring equal access to mental health support
  • Emerging evidence of reductions in prescribing of antidepressants

The pilot is currently running in five ProCare practices across Auckland:

  • Mangere Health Centre
  • Peninsula Medical Centre
  • Health New Lynn
  • University of Auckland Student Health Services
  • Turuki Healthcare Panmure

Funding for the pilot has come from a range of sources: ProCare Health, Waitemata DHB’s ‘Our Health in Mind’ primary care programme; Counties Manukau Health’s Primary Mental Health Initiative programme; and Auckland DHB’s Ministry of Health ‘Fit for the Future’ programme.

"In my first session, the Health Improvement Practitioner gave me at least three different things that I needed to start practicing, and that made me feel like I was instantly making progress.  And that's kind of what I needed, I needed to feel like I was actually getting somewhere." Health Improvement Practitioner Client.

"She put me at east...it was so easy to talk about everything. Life, family, money; I put it all on the table." Health Coach client.
